Pythagoras
The Ownership Wars: Who Owns YouPythagoras functions less as a developed character than as a governing intellectual symbol. The book places his name at the center of an argument for a society ordered by knowledge, reason, and demonstrated excellence rather than by inherited wealth. Against the Ownership Class and its dynastic claims, Pythagoras represents the possibility that human beings can rise through intellectual and moral cultivation rather than merely reproduce the advantages of their families.
Identity and Intellectual Symbolism
Pythagoras appears alongside Plato as a touchstone for philosophical rule. The book contrasts their ideal of enlightened leadership with what it calls the rule of anti-Philosopher Kings, identifying Donald Trump as the grotesque opposite of that tradition. In this contrast, Pythagoras is not treated primarily as a historical biography but as a standard: intelligence, abstraction, discipline, and a commitment to truths deeper than money or spectacle.
The invocation also places Pythagoras within a wider philosophical constellation that includes Leibniz, Goethe, and Hegel. The proposed political order is described as Pythagorean, Platonist, and Hegelian, with Pythagoras and Leibniz at its core. His name therefore signifies a civilization organized around mathematics, logic, metaphysics, and the pursuit of universal knowledge rather than around consumer goods, property accumulation, or personal celebrity.
Opposition to Hereditary Power
The book invokes Pythagoras in its attack on the hereditary principle. It presents inheritance as a mechanism through which wealth, power, and social standing pass from one generation to the next, producing a permanent caste of the super-rich. A 100 percent inheritance tax is proposed as the direct means of preventing such dynastic reproduction; under that arrangement, the book argues, the inherited fortune that enabled Donald Trump’s rise would not have been available to him.
This argument makes Pythagoras an emblem of meritocratic legitimacy. The book insists that the Ownership Class should not be allowed to convert family wealth into permanent authority, and it describes support for hereditary wealth as a betrayal of meritocracy. Pythagoras consequently stands on the side of achieved excellence against inherited privilege, and on the side of Philosopher Kings against leaders whose authority rests on money, family advantage, or popular manipulation.
Pythagoras and the Optimized Human Future
Pythagoras is also connected to the book’s vision of human transformation. Humanity is described as a golden species capable of changing from base metals into gold, not through consumption but through the development of every person’s potential. The desired future is therefore not one in which only the top one percent is optimized; it is one in which the whole human species is elevated.
Within this vision, Pythagoras represents the intellectual resources needed to create a Community of Gods, a Society of the Divine, and a new humanity. The book contrasts that collective aspiration with the narrow ambition attributed to Donald Trump, whose Trump Tower is presented as the summit of a materialist imagination unable to conceive anything sublime. Pythagoras thus becomes the anti-Trump figure in philosophical terms: the pursuit of proportion, thought, and universal human flourishing against the accumulation of dollars, gold, and monumental property.
Science, Reason, and the State
The planned Gnostic Meritocratic State is explicitly aligned with Pythagorean principles. It is imagined as a state devoted to art, knowledge, reason, logic, and the unlocking of the universe’s secrets. The book rejects a political order centered on libertarianism, predatory free-market capitalism, property rights, and inherited wealth, proposing instead a republic that reflects the General Will and gives intellectual and civic purpose priority over private greed.
Pythagoras’s association with mathematics also supports the book’s criticism of scientific materialism and empiricism. In its account of the neglected tradition of scientific idealism and rationalism, the book argues that science should be more closely linked to logic, deduction, mathematics, and a priori reasoning. Pythagoras is not discussed as a participant in a plot event; his function is foundational and programmatic. His name helps authorize the claim that political and scientific life should be governed by intelligible principles rather than by the interests of the Ownership Class.
Narrative Role and Evaluation
Pythagoras serves as a symbolic counterweight to the book’s recurring images of mass delusion, right-wing anti-intellectualism, and hereditary plutocracy. Where the right wing is portrayed as a Dunning-Kruger mob hostile to experts and the state, Pythagoras stands for disciplined understanding and the possibility that knowledge can organize public life. Where Donald Trump is presented as the product and beneficiary of inherited wealth, Pythagoras represents a standard of greatness that cannot be reduced to property.
His role culminates in the book’s prophecy of a coming Jacobin age and worldwide revolution. The accession of a senior member of the Ownership Class to the White House is treated as a historical provocation that will expose the consequences of oligarchic rule and strengthen the resolve of the Enlightened Ones. In that anticipated transformation, Pythagoras is part of the intellectual inheritance claimed by the future: a sign that the next order should be meritorious, rational, and collectively elevating rather than dynastic, materialist, and ruled by the rich.
